Two residences and two schools located near the Ellicott City and Elkridge border were evacuated Friday after construction crews broke a gas main during road work, according to school and emergency officials.
According to Howard County's Department of Fire and Rescue Services, eight units responded at 11 a.m. to the the area of Ilchester Road and Landing Road to a report that a 4" plastic gas line was struck during roadway construction.
As a result, two homes and two schools -- Ilchester Elementaty School and Bonnie Branch Middle School -- were evacuated and residents of another 100 homes were told to shelter in place, according to HCDFRS. The evacuation was done as a precaution.
Students from Ilchester Elementary School were taken by bus to Rockburn Elementary School at 6145 Montgomery Road, and remained there through the end of the school day, according to the school system.
Students from Bonnie Branch Middle School walked to Trinty School, nearby at 4985 Ilchester Road, and remained there through the end of the day.
According to HCDFRS, BGE officials said the leak was repaired at 3 p.m. but they are still working to repair the gas line.
