The L.L. Bean store at the Columbia mall will not relocate to a smaller location inside the mall, and instead will close its doors at the end of May, according to an L.L. Bean spokesperson.

"L.L.Bean has been a valued tenant at The Mall in Columbia. We never like to see a retailer leave our property, but when that situation arrives, it provides us with another opportunity to continue to provide great retail options to our shoppers," Katie Essing, the mall general manager, said in a statement.

In July, a plan was announced to remove 30,000 square feet of retail space, all of which is currently occupied by L.L. Bean and the small surface parking area behind the store, and replace it with an "open-air" plaza surrounded by undetermined retail and restaurant tenants.

At that time, a senior development director for mall owner General Growth Properties said they were negotiating with L.L. Bean to relocate the store to another location in the Mall.

According to an L.L. Bean spokesperson, the negotiations "didn't work out."

Essing added: "Our proposed expansion, which includes the addition of nearly 75,000 square feet of new shops and restaurants, will enhance an already exceptional retailer mix in order to provide our customers with the best shopping, dining and entertainment experience possible."
