During the 2014 Howard County tennis season, teams and individuals alike put their talents on display in a big way. As a result, there was much to celebrate as the spring dwindled to a close.
River Hill's Nicholas Zhu and Prateek Swamykumar collected the county’s first doubles state championship since 1985 at the University of Maryland, College Park, highlighting a tournament that also saw many top performances from players around the county.
Marriotts Ridge freshman Abby Thornton lost to Wootton's Miranda Deng, the eventual champion, in the semifinals, and Randallstown's Asmara Rose in three sets in the consolation finals. Still, Thornton’s success at such an early age should make for an exciting career.
As a team, Atholton continued its domination by securing its third consecutive Howard County Cup. The Raiders edged Marriotts Ridge, 35.5-33.
Atholton's Matt Sklar defeated Marriotts Ridge's Cade Buch, 6-3, 6-3, in the boys singles championship, and the Raiders also won the county girls doubles title, as Margaret Tatum and Erica Lee defeated Mt. Hebron's Kiran Pant and Serene Mathew, 7-5, 6-1.
