Well, there weren't any upsets, per se, last week, but that doesn't mean that there isn't anything interesting to talk about.
As Hammond coach Justin Carey told me, Week 4 and Week 5 are when the season really starts to take shape, as teams start to become who they are.
Or as Carey succinctly put it, "This Friday night will tell a lot. It'll tell who's who."
Carey's undefeated Golden Bears will visit No. 2 Glenelg (2-1) in the Game of the Week.
Centennial at River Hill pits two undefeated teams against each other.
Reservoir at Oakland Mills should also be good, and in Saturday's homecoming game, Long Reach will host Atholton as both teams try for their first win.
Just because there were no upsets last week doesn't mean the rankings didn't change! So read on to see who moved up!
(Last week's ranking in parentheses.)
1. (1.) River Hill (3-0, 84 points scored-9 points allowed)
Whatever works. The Hawks have three 200-pound running backs, and the 84-9 scoring differential is proof that the formula is working.
Last week: beat Atholton (0-3), 28-6. This week: home against Centennial (3-0), Friday at 7 p.m.
Wins: G (7-3), MR (49-0), A (28-6). Losses: NA.
2. (2.) Glenelg (2-1, 41-19)
The Gladiators' defense has been rock solid, and once the offense gets going, this could be a playoff team.
Last week: beat Reservoir (1-2), 24-6. This week: home against Hammond (3-0), Friday at 7 p.m.
W: WL (14-6), Re (24-6). L: RH (7-3).
3. (3.) Hammond (3-0, 98-22)
Looking forward to seeing the Golden Bears in action Friday night. Sophomore receiver Deandre House is turning heads, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this team knock off either of the teams ahead of them.
Last week: beat Oakland Mills (1-2), 30-14. This week: at Glenelg (2-1), Friday at 7 p.m.
W: MH (27-0), LR (41-8), OM (30-14). L: NA.
4. (4.) Howard (3-0, 88-36)
When the Lions moved up to 4A, they apparently stepped their game up as well. This is just a well-rounded, solidly built football team.
Last week: beat Marriotts Ridge (1-2), 35-10. This week: home against Mt. Hebron (0-3), Friday at 7 p.m.
W: WL (13-10), A (40-16), MR (35-10). L: NA.
5. (6.) Wilde Lake (1-2, 45-34)
The Wildecats' losses were close ones to very good teams, and they looked good in a 29-7 win over Long Reach last week.
Last week: beat Long Reach (0-3), 29-7. This week: at Marriotts Ridge (1-2), Friday at 7 p.m.
W: LR (29-7). L: Ho (13-10), G (14-6).
6. (7.) Centennial (3-0, 115-48)
The Eagles get another bump after beating Mt. Hebron at homecoming. How well they can hang with two-time defending state champion River Hill this Friday night will tell a lot.
Last week: beat Mt. Hebron (0-3), 28-21. This week: at River Hill (3-0), Friday at 7 p.m.
W: Re (28-7), OM (59-20), MH (28-21). L: NA.
7. (5.) Atholton (0-3, 57-75)
The Raiders take a tumble, even though they looked pretty good against River Hill last Friday. The reality is that they're 0-3 with a negative scoring differential. The funny thing is that a seven-game win streak to close out the season isn't out of the question (they'd have to beat three teams ranked ahead of them, though.)
Last week: lost to River Hill (28-6). This week: at Long Reach, Saturday at 1 p.m.
W: NA. L: MR (FF), Ho (40-16), RH (28-6).
8. (8.) Reservoir (1-2, 49-66)
The Gators haven't quite gotten rolling since making the playoffs last year. This week's game against Oakland Mills should be a good one.
Last week: lost to Glenelg (2-1), 24-6. This week: at Oakland Mills (1-2), Friday at 7 p.m.
W: MH (36-14). L: C (28-7), G (24-6).
9. (9.) Mt. Hebron (0-3, 35-91)
Mt. Hebron showed good fight in jumping to a 14-0 lead over Centennial last Saturday, but the losses continue to pile up. Zach Nicholas has been impressive, but the Vikings' might need to find more ways to move the ball on offense.
Last week: lost to Centennial (3-0), 28-21 This week: at Howard (3-0), Friday at 7 p.m.
W: NA. L: Ha (27-0), Re (36-14), C (28-21).
10. (10.) Oakland Mills (1-2, 78-95)
The Scorpions quietly have the fifth best scoring offense in the league. The 'upset alert' will be on standby this week against visiting Reservoir.
Last week: lost to Hammond (3-0), 30-14. This week: home against Reservoir (1-2), Friday at 7 p.m.
W: LR (44-6). L: C (59-20), Ha (30-14).
On the bubble: Long Reach (0-3, 21-114), Marriotts Ridge (1-2, 17-119).
