The Oakland Mills boys lacrosse program hosted its own spring break tournament Wednesday, and though it finished a perfect 2-0, the first win was fundamentally different from the second.
In the early matchup against Pikesville, the Scorpions (1-5, 3-5) got two goals and an assist from Wyatt Neely on the way to a 3-1 victory. Later in the day, Neely netted two more scores and added three assists, but it was Evan Riss’ five-goal performance that stood out in the team’s 12-5 win against Poly.
“We had a good offense going in the first game, it’s just a matter of finishing,” Oakland Mills coach Matt Hipszer said. “We finally figured that out in the second game.”
Kholten Allen and Matt Claxton also connected on two scores each for Oakland Mills in the team’s second game offensive explosion.
Riss’ performance on the day (6 goals) was just a reminder of the freshman’s fast start to the season.
“Every single time I step out on that field, I just like to play my game,” said Riss, who recorded his fifth game with three or more goals. Two of his tallies came off Neely assists.
After building a 3-0 advantage in the first quarter, the Scorpions allowed Poly to score four times in the second. With its lead diminished to just one goal less than 30 seconds before the break, Riss backed down his Poly defender, turned around and fired, giving his teammates a much-needed boost heading into the locker room.
Hipszer also commended his team’s defensive toughness between the two contests. Goalie Jesse Ketchum stopped 15 shots on the day, and held Poly to just one goal in the final 24 minutes.
“I didn’t think we would win 12-5. I thought it would be a one or two-goal game,” he said of the game against the Engineers. “I told them (at halftime) to just stay with it, stay with the game plan and run through the offense. We got the looks, and finished them in that second game.”
