When the starting weight class blinked onto the scoreboard at Reservoir Thursday night, the prospects already looked bleak for visiting Glenelg.
Reservoir would start the key Howard County dual wih senior captain Mason Kilcarr (132), a returning state finalist, and end it with his two younger brothers: Trent and Troy.
As it turns out, the defending county tournament champion Gladiators did more than enough in the weight classes between the Kilcarrs to defeat Reservoir, 33-23.
"I knew they would start off with a bang ... but I knew with our line-up we were stronger" through the middle, said first-year Glenelg coach Matt Bichner, a former state champ for the Gladiators. "We were hoping we could have gotten some more bonus points and put it a little more out of reach so it wasn't so close at the end, but hey, we'll take it."
Mason Kilcarr and Trent Kilcarr both scored first period pins, and Troy Kilcarr closed out the match with a comeback decision over Glenelg's Parker Griffie, but seniors Wes Beattie (182, pin) and Michael Sullivan (285) scored the only other points for Reservoir (4-1).
From 138 to 170, the Gladiators won five consecutive matches, including a first-period pin by senior Troy Walter (160) on a half nelson, to build a daunting 18-5 lead.
"Bonus points in a match like this are really important because it's pretty evenly matched," said Walter. "This was a statement match ... this was a big deal for us."
After Sullivan, a recent Mount Mat Madness champion, came away with a decision at heavyweight, Glenelg lightweights Sam Kraus (106) and Collin Silk (113) delivered the back-to-back victories that clinched the win for the Gladiators.
"I hope we get a chance to wrestle them again ... we kind of learned where we are wrestling them," said Reservoir coach Andrew McIntyre. 'We learned that we have a ways to go and we'll do the work."
At 5-0, Glenelg and defending regular season county champion River Hill (4-0) are the last two undefeated teams in Howard County. They'll meet on Jan. 28 at Glenelg in a match that will most likely decide the league champion. The Gladiators and Hawks have combined to win the last seven regular season titles.
"Every year for us River Hill is the team to beat," Walter said. "Now that we've taken care of Reservoir, that's our next step ... I think we can hang with anyone in the county."
