Glenelg Country girls lacrosse squeaks by Park

Alyssa Arnold was in the position that every player thinks about no matter what the sport. The game is on the line, the clock is running out and you’ve got the ball.

Score and your team wins; miss and your team loses.

Fortunately for Glenelg Country School, with 5 seconds left Wednesday’s game, their freshman attack player scored on her 8-meter free position to give the Dragons a 14-13 lead over Park School.

There was one final draw, which, in theory, gave Park a slim chance to tie the score, but to do so would have taken a perfect play that started at the midfield.

“It came down to the last draw,” said Glenelg Country coach Paige Walton. “I think Park did get possession but I was watching the clock.”

Basically, the lead bounced back and forth between the two teams all game long.

“We were up, tied and then down,” Walton said. “The game came down to who had the last possession and who took care of the ball.”

The Dragons had ball control the final two minutes of the game. A foul by Park’s defense set up Arnold’s winning shot.

Arnold had four goals in the game as did teammate Lizzie Rice. Mallory Pappas, one of four seniors on the Glenelg Country squad, scored five goals.

“Alyssa is a very strong young player, and Mallory and Lizzie had big days for us as did Cameron (Baumgardner),” Walton said.

Baumgardner made six saves.

Glenelg Country, now 6-3 in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference, is in the meat of its schedule, playing the three teams above it in the standings — all in a row.

The Dragons (6-3) lost to league-leading and undefeated Friends, 12-7, on Monday and then beat Park (5-2), which is one notch above them in the standings. Friday, Glenelg Country travels to second-place Mercy, which is currently undefeated (4-0).

“We’re taking it one game at a time. We’re growing and learning and it was a big win for us today,” Walton said.
