Atholton tennis wins third straight Howard County Cup

The Atholton Raiders won their third consecutive Howard County Cup May 10 at the Wilde Lake Tennis Club, edging rival Marriotts Ridge, 35.5-33.

Atholton's Matt Sklar defeated Marriotts Ridge's Cade Buch, 6-3, 6-3, in the boys singles championship, while Marriotts Ridge's Abby Thorton defeated Centennial's Jazmine Walle, 6-1, 7-5, for the girls title.

The Raiders also won the girls doubles title, as Margaret Tatum and Erica Lee defeated Mt. Hebron's Kiran Pant and Serene Mathew, 7-5, 6-1.

River Hill, which placed third with 28 points, was represented by fifth-seeded boys doubles champions Nick Zhu and Prateek Swamykumar, who defeated Atholton's Mark Mao and Colin McEwen, 6-1, 6-3.

Finally, Howard crowned Emma Hoesman and Max Balter as mixed doubles champions after their 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over River Hill siblings Byron and Rita Hung.

The regional tournament begins Thursday at Druid Hill and is scheduled to finish Friday at the Wilde Lake Tennis Club.
