The Howard Community College cross country program traveled to Dickinson College over the weekend to compete at the Red Devil Long/Short Classic. The unique format has men’s races at 8k and 4k, and women’s races at 4k and 6k. The team was split up so all the races could be entered.
In the women’s 6k, Caroline Haden (Howawrd High School) continued to lead the women, coming in 76th with a time of 26:11. Anna Sandacz came in 129th in 28:39, Cindy Rockefeller 155th in 32:31 and Shannon Stubs (Chapelgate) 162nd in 35:01.
The top Dragon in the women’s 4k was Rachael Lape (Marriotts Ridge) who placed 113th in 18:48. She was followed by Gabrielle Petty 128th in 20:11 and Kayla Johnson (Atholton) 141st in 23:26.
Gary Smolyak (Atholton) placed 31st in the men’s 4k with a time of 13:09. He was followed by Sam Graves, 62nd in 13:48 and Edgar Propst, 77th in 14:11. Adam Gartrell (Reservoir) ran 27:52 for the 8k, placing 42nd. Brooks Ward came in 107th in 29:20, John Leierzapf (Long Reach) 141st in 31:05 and Eric Surgrowe (Mt. Hebron) was 183th in 34:42.
“This was a high quality meet with some strong Division-II and Division-III programs” said head coach Steve Musselman. “This gave the team some great talent to run against. We had a hard week of practice so it was interesting to see how they would respond.“
The team will travel to Greensboro, North Carolina this weekend to compete at the Hagan Stone Classic. The men are defending champions.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
