The Wilde Lake boys lacrosse team found a little confidence on Friday afternoon in their Cat Cup Tournament. After opening their season with losses in a brutal three-game stretch against tough county opponents, the Wildecats turned some of those hard knock lessons into success.

Behind an inspired offensive effort in the third quarter, Wilde Lake picked up its first victory of the season with a 13-8 win over visiting Bishop McNamara in their semifinals matchup.

“We played three really good teams (Howard, Reservoir, Mt. Hebron) and its been hard to get in sync,” Wilde Lake coach Jonathan Robinson said. "But in the second half we simplified our offense and went to our strengths. ... It's good to get the first one."

Senior midfielder Colin Tiffey and junior attack Siyon Lowe helped Wilde Lake break open a close game in the second half. Ahead, 5-3, at halftime, the Wildecats dominated the third quarter – firing shot after shot at Mustangs’ goalie Romyel Santos (24 saves).

Tiffey and Lowe each scored three times as Wilde Lake outscored Bishop McNamara, 7-2, for a 12-5 advantage heading into the final period.

Lowe got things going with a spin move and finish in front of the cage just 32 seconds into the second half and Tiffey added a running left-handed shot a minute later.

“The biggest difference between the first half and second half is that we started to play our game,” Tiffey said. "We finally starting running our offense and moving the ball. We also started getting groundballs, which I think was important."

Another key to success for the Wildecats was Shawn Winans controlling face-offs and goalie Jeremy Kass coming up with timely saves. Jack Quinn added a goal during the third quarter run and John Radcliffe opened the fourth with a tally to put the game out of reach.

The Mustangs tried to make a late push, scoring the game's last three goals but the hole was too deep to get out of.

“We took a little while to get on track but I think we figured out what we needed to do to move forward,” Robinson said.
