If their opening match, a 43-31 win at South Carroll on Wednesday night, is any indication, 2012-2013 could be a very strong season for the Wilde Lake Wildecats.
"We're out of the gates, it was a good starting off match for us," said first-year coach Jeff Starnes, who coaches the team alongside Bill Smith.
Wilde Lake recorded six pins in the victory: by Noah Polonsky (113), Daniel Andrews (132), Tyler Anderson (145), Tola Morakinyo (170), Kris Gough (220) and Ne'Co Jones (285).
Andrews, Jordan Trinh, Anderson, and defending county champion Malik Jackson won four straight matches in the middle weights to give Wilde Lake a 25-15 lead, but then South Carroll's Wade Slatniske closed the gap with a third period pin.
Morakinyo immediately answered with a first-period pin of his own to reclaim the 10-point lead for Wilde Lake, but then Jake Pooton (182, pin) and Steven Schmitz (195, major) tied it up with back-to-back victories to leave it up to the heavyweights.
Gough (220) and Jones (285) didn't disappoint, recording back-to-back pins to secure the win.
"When it counted they came through, and that's a positive," Starnes said.
Wilde Lake will make its home and conference debut Thursday night against Oakland Mills.Wilde Lake 43, South Carroll 31
