Special Olympics Howard County will award three scholarships to outstanding student volunteers who have been committed to the program as volunteers and advocates of the athletes. High school seniors and college students are eligible to apply.
The Jackie Burk Memorial Award for Outstanding Student Volunteer for Special Olympics Howard County ($1,500) was created in 2004 by Jack and Linda Burk in memory of their daughter, Jackie, a special friend and volunteer to Special Olympics Howard County. The Allan Homes Award ($1,000) was established in 2005 by Allan and Kathy Waschak. Allan is a member of the Special Olympics Howard County management team and aquatics coordinator, and Kathy is one of the soccer coordinators. The Kathy Lindner Memorial Award ($500), in memory of Special Olympics Howard County's first volunteer coordinator, was created in 2012. Kathy was a dedicated volunteer in a number of sports, including the annual softball invitational.

Soccer Association of Columbia is registering players for the Spring 2014 Recreation season scheduled to begin the weekend of April 4. The league is open to players from ages 7-18. The First Tee of Howard County announces three new sites for its program, which be offering PLAYer classes for students age 7-9: April 24, 5 p.m. at Waverly Woods Golf Course; April 28, 5 p.m. at Hobbits Glen Golf Course; April 29, 5 p.m. at Timbers at Troy Golf Course. The classes go for eight weeks and are an hour and a half long. Clubs are provided, if necessary. Register online at thefirstteehowardcounty.org.
The Timbers at Troy Ladies Golf League will hold an organizational meeting on March 27 at 9 a.m. at the Timbers clubhouse, 6100 Marshalee Drive in Elkridge. This is a Thursday morning, 18-hole league, open to ladies with an established USGA handicap or who have played enough to establish a handicap. The Maryland State's Attorneys' Association will present the inaugural 7k Run to Remember at Centennial Park in Howard County April 5. The charity race will benefit the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence and kicks off National Crime Victims' Right Week. The race length represents one-k for every day of observance or remembrance. Registration will close April 2. Registration is open for the Seventh Annual 24 Hours of Booty Columbia that will kick off Aug. 23 at 2 p.m. Participants must register online at 24hoursofbooty.org. Funds raised from the event will help benefit the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults and Livestrong Foundation. Registration fee is $45, and participants must raise a minimum of $200 prior to the ride.
