Senior forward Destini Joyce scored a career-high 14 points to help Long Reach earn a 43-33 victory over Wilde Lake on Monday.
Fellow post Gillian Engelbrecht grabbed 19 rebounds, while Katelyn Peterson added eight points and six boards as the Lightning limited the Wildecats’ opportunities for second-chance points. Engelbrecht has averaged double digit rebounds in the last couple of games for Long Reach.
“Everyone came up big tonight,” Lightning coach Kelli Cofield said. “It was especially good getting such big numbers from the post. We had a tough loss on Friday against Centennial, but the girls really bounced back tonight and played hard. The game ball definitely went to our post players this evening.”
Long Reach held on to a slim 17-15 lead at halftime and outscored Wilde Lake, 10-6, for a small cushion entering the fourth quarter.
Brynn Drury paced the Wildecats with eight points, while Alyssa Bialek and Kourtney Harrison combined for 11.
Wilde Lake has taken close loses the past two nights after falling to Oakland Mills, 43-39, on Friday, but Wildecats coach Caitlin Williams has seen the improvement in her team’s play as the season has worn on.
“I’m really proud of how far they have come,” Williams said. “We just need to turn a corner and I think we will be pleasantly surprised with the second half of the season.”
