MPSSAA announces 2014 boys basketball playoff draw

The annual Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association basketball playoff draw was held at Long Reach on Sunday morning.

Howard County features teams in the 2A, 3A and 4A classifications and the first round of region play is scheduled to begin on Friday, Feb. 28 at the school with the lower-numbered seed.

For the boys, the 2A South region features three teams — Hammond, Marriotts Ridge and Oakland Mills — in Section I. Oakland Mills received the top seed in the section and a first-round bye. The Scorpions will play the winner of fourth-seeded Marriotts Ridge and fifth-seeded Calvert. Hammond has the sixth seed and will play third seed McDonough for the right to play second-seeded Patuxent in the section semifinals.

In the 3A East region, seven Howard County schools are split up between the two sections. In Section I, Centennial got the second seed and a first-round bye. Mt. Hebron is seeded third and will host Digital Harbor, with the winner playing Centennial. Long Reach got the fifth seed and will travel to Poly, with the winner advancing to play against top-seeded City.

In section II of the 3A East region, Atholton got the top seed and a first-round bye. The Raiders will face the winner of fourth-seeded Wilde Lake and fifth-seeded Glenelg. On the other half of the section bracket, second-seeded Reservoir and third-seeded River Hill both got byes and will play one another in the section semifinals.

Howard is the county’s representative in the 4A North region. The Lions are seeded third in Section II and have a bye before having to face Blake in a section semifinal round game.

The section quarterfinal winners will move on to play in the section semifinals on Monday, March 3. The section finals will follow on March 5 and the region finals will be played March 7.

The regional champions then will advance to the state semifinals at the University of Maryland’s Comcast Center, which are slated to be played March 13-14.
