Trailing 30-10 with only five weight classes left at Glenelg Country Thursday evening, the Long Reach Lightning looked to be in bad shape.

But the Lightning had something in the final five weight classes that the Dragons didn't: namely, wrestlers.

Long Reach earned four forfeits over the final five weight classes, and Deon Williams (220) scored a pin in the one contested weight class in that stretch, to complete the comeback, 40-30.

"I'm really happy with our talent," said coach Doug Jesse, who is coaching the Dragons through their first varsity wrestling season in school history. "It's just that we're giving up so many forfeits."

Glenelg Country, which wrestled a junior varsity season last year, won six of the first eight weight classes, including pins by Matt Campbell (126), Reid Chaconas (132), Eric Wootton (145) and Eddie Howlette (152).

Long Reach's only wins in that stretch came from Diego Galindo (138, major decision) and Ronald Hindman (113).

It was Long Reach's first non-tournament dual meet win in more than five seasons.

"We're getting there," said Lightning coach Joe Novotny.

Hindman, a senior, and Glenelg Country's Christian Vinyard each scored exhibition pins at the conclusion of the varisty match.

After the match with Long Reach, Glenelg Country took on visiting Coppin Academy for the second match of the split double header. The Dragons prevailed, 48-24, for the program's first victory. Sam Smith (120), Tucker Clay (138), Eddie Howlette (152) and Emanuel Curtis (220) all scored pins in the win.
