Glenelg's 35-3 win over visiting Hammond Friday night lacked drama, but it contained the elements that define Gladiator football.
"It's our typical team -- we are who we are and we've got to make the most of it," said Glenelg coach Butch Schaffer, whose team ran the ball 53 times for more than 320 yards and four touchdowns.
Twelve different players carried the ball for Glenelg (3-1), led by seniors Jared Jacoby (16 carries, 94 yards, TD) and David Brookhart (11 carries, 84 yards, 3 TDs).
"I'm giving all the credit to our line … we had the size advantage and they just opened up holes for us all night," Jacoby said. "On the line we have Craig Burris at center, David Robbins and Jordan Alexander."
Those three players weigh a combined 740 pounds.
"Our line does a tremendous job and they've been playing together for three years," Schaffer said. "We just tried to mix it up, we've got a lot of guys who can run the ball."
Matt Baxter (6 carries, 30 yards), Juny Gonzalez (7, 38) and Carey Doody (4, 25) also gained significant yardage for Glenelg.
Hammond, which came into the game undefeated, allowed a 52-yard touchdown pass from Jack Hogan to Luke Cheswick just before halftime, and then fumbled the ball away on each of its first two second-half possessions, leading to Glenelg touchdowns.
"Obviously we can't turn the ball over, that hurt us in our own territory, and defensively we've got to get off blocks. They were real good up front and we had to make some plays. They capitalized off of our mistakes … it was nothing special, they just come downhill right at you," said first-year Hammond coach Justin Carey, whose team had allowed only 22 points through the first three games. "3-1, that's still pretty good for the first four games, I can't complain with that."
The Golden Bears were led offensively by senior quarterback Tyler Martin, who rushed for 32 yards and passed for 78 on seven completions. John Mbah caught a 31-yard pass on fourth and 19 in the second quarter to set up a 22-yard field goal by Nima Najafabadi, and Brendan Urban caught three passes for 30 yards.
Brent Richardson (fumble recovery) and Sam Powell each caused fumbles for Glenelg.
Since losing to two-time defending state champion River Hill in Week 1, 7-3, Glenelg has outscored its last three opponents, 73-15.
River Hill and Howard are now the last two undefeated teams in Howard County, and they'll play on Nov. 1 at Howard.
