Defending champion River Hill takes lead going into county wrestling finals

Defending county, regional and 3A/4A state tournament champion River Hill trailed Glenelg, 107-96, after the first day of the 2013 Howard County tournament at Oakland Mills High School in Columbia. But the Hawks sent a county best six of their 10 semifinalists on to the championship round with wins on Saturday morning to take a commanding lead, 171-157.5, over the Gladiators.

Scroll down for complete standings, semifinal results and championship pairings.

River Hill's finalists include defending champions Cory Daniel (195) and Logan Kirby (220).

Michael Beck (106) and Brian Kirby (182), both 2012 county finalists, senior captain Taariq Mohammed (113) and freshman Sean Guthier (126) will also represent the Hawks in the finals, scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday night at Oakland Mills.

Glenelg (157.5 points), Wilde Lake (137), Oakland Mills (121.5) and Mt. Hebron (114) each advanced four wrestlers to the finals, and rounded out of the top five in the team standings.

The Gladiators, who won the county and 1A/2A state tournaments in 2011, sent a tournament-best 12 wrestlers to the semifinals, but sustained eight losses in that round.

Seniors Chris Winter (113) and Ryan Carter (138) were two of Glenelg's semifinal winners.

Glenelg's Anthony Pagnotta (170) and defending state champ Sean Twigg (285) each won by one point in the semifinals. Pagnotta defeated Reservoir's Wes Beattie, 7-6, in the final seconds, and Twigg defeated River Hill's first-year wrestler Justin Nestor, 3-2, in triple overtime.

After each wrestler escaped quickly in the second overtime, Twigg had to hold Nestor down for 30 seconds.

Nestor got to his feet several times and nearly escaped, but Twigg eventually immobilized by by wrapping his legs around Nestor's upper body.

Centennial's Sameh Boulos (152) also won in overtime, defeating River Hill's Casey Guthier, 5-3.

Wilde Lake's four finalists include defending county champion Malik Jackson (145) and undefeated Tola Morakinyo (170), who was a finalist last year.

Jordan Trinh (126), also a returning county finalist, and Daniel Andrews (132) will also represent the Wildecats in the finals.

Oakland Mills' Zach Hensley will attempt to win his third Howard County title on Saturday evening after winning at 103 in 2011 and 106 in 2012. He'll be joined by teammates Dominick Clarke (182), Robby Happy (195) and Roy Kadje (285) in the finals.

Mt. Hebron had only five semifinalists, but advanced four of them onto the championship round, including Connor Strunk (145) and Ryan Hassan (220).

Sophomore Jeff Hayden (106) and senior Joe Kendrick (152) each knocked off top seeded sophomores — Glenelg's Tim Null (106) and Reservoir's defending county champ Sam Rowell (152). Rowell missed the entire 2012-2013 regular season recovering from surgery, but returned for the county tournament.

Reservoir defending county champ Mason Kilcarr (132) and his younger brother, Trent (120), did advance to the finals.

Hammond's Bryan Overton and Atholton defending county champion Pat Mullens each recorded three pins on their way to the 160-pound championship match. Mullens trailed Oakland Mills sophomore Jaron Smith, 7-3, before scoring the pin early in the third period and avenging two losses from earlier this season.

Centennial freshman Austin Kraisser (138) was the only other wrestler to score three pins on his way to the finals. Kraisser's older brother, Nathan, won four county and four state titles between 2009 and 2012, and Brian Kraisser was a two-time county champ in 2009 and 2010.
