Oakland Mills put together a second half to remember Wednesday, pulling away for a convincing 70-24 victory over Howard.
The Scorpions, who had four guys reach double figures in the scoring department, broke things open with a 21-0 run to open the third quarter and ended up outscoring the Lions 37-4 in the second half on the way to the team’s ninth straight win to open the season.
Howard (1-6, 2-7) struggled with the Oakland Mills (7-0, 9-0) defensive pressure after intermission, with several Lions’ turnovers directly leading to transition points for the Scorpions. Guards Deshawn Willis (14 points) and Nikhi Bradley (9) were particularly tough at the top of the press for Oakland Mills.
For as lopsided as the final score ended up, the first half was actually relatively competitive most of the way. Behind a couple of lay-up by Mike Anderson, Howard scored seven unanswered points to end the first quarter down just five points, 15-10.
Then, in the second quarter, Oakland Mills made a push to extend things a little, but still never led by more than 13. Dajuan Dent (11 points), Willis and Lavon Long (13 points) were all keys for the Scorpions in establishing the cushion they did have.
The second half, though, saw Oakland Mills put it all together.
All 11 of the field goals the Scorpions made in the third quarter were lay-ups or dunks. After a quiet first half, Daivon Tapscott (12 points) got going to join the offensive push for Oakland Mills.
Both teams will be back in action Friday night, with Oakland Mills traveling to face Wilde Lake (4-2, 6-3) and Howard hosting Reservoir (4-2, 5-3).
