Bryana Nguyen and the Atholton girls golf team saved their best for last. Playing in the final regular-season match of the fall at the Timbers at Troy on Thursday, Nguyen tied her career-best match score of 31 points and the Raiders rolled to a county-record team mark of 86 points.
The record day was more than enough to win, as Atholton (10-1) cruised past River Hill 86-15.
For Nguyen, who made four birdies and no bogies on her way to the fourth round of 31 points (4-under par) of her career, it was a special day for another reason as well. Her score helped her finish the regular season with a 28.4-point average, which sets a new record for Howard County golfers (boys or girls).
Oakland Mills’ Donnie Shin was the previous record holder, having averaged 28.1 points in 2005.
“I wanted to go through my whole high school career leaving my name somewhere in history … that’s what my goal was the whole time,” Nguyen said. “So making that mark and setting the average score record was a pretty big deal for me.”
Setting the team record, though, took more than just another stellar round from Nguyen. Avni Johnson put together a round to remember as well, going for 26 points (one-over par) and one of the top scores of her career. Amanda Petersen was also in the 20s, posting 22 points alongside Nguyen in the first group.
With Maddie Fields rounding out the scoring with seven points, the Raiders had themselves a new county mark — breaking the previous mark of 84 points set by the Marriotts Ridge girls earlier this season.
River Hill, in the loss, was led by Lexi Hayward’s 15 points.
