Atholton coach Erik Burnett believes that his team is knocking on the door of being a solid lacrosse team.
The Raiders have gotten off to a 1-5 start — which includes a pair of one-goal overtime losses to Franklin and Huntingtown — but Burnett is sure his team has the talent, they just have to believe it.
“It’s the point in the season where the losses start to accumulate a little bit and people wonder if we are a good team but it’s there,” Burnett said. “Once they start to see if show up on the scoreboard then they play to it and we look pretty good.”
Atholton’s offense looked really good on Tuesday with eight different players scoring a goal. Junior midfielder Tyler Shams had the hot hand, notching four goals for the Raiders in a 12-2 victory over visiting Oakland Mills.
The Raiders moved the ball effectively on the offensive end, accounting for nine assists on their 12 goals scored.
“We moved the ball well and got a few more assists in the book today than usual,” Shams said. “We’re finally starting to execute and that’s something we’ve been lacking.”
Junior attack Aiden Cunningham got the Scorpions off to a quick start with a goal at the 8:50 mark of the first quarter. After scores by Shams and Robert Billeck to end the period, Oakland Mill’s Jack Farrall tied the score at 2-2 with an extra-man goal early in the second.
From at point on, however, Atholton had complete control of the game.
Shams sent a laser shot past Scorpions goalie Brandon Andrews (14 saves) to help the Raiders reclaim the lead and Glen Kasoff added back-to-back goals to make it 5-2 at halftime.
Atholton outscored Oakland Mills, 7-0, in the second half .
“We were a little slow to get started, which seems to be the story of the year for us,” Burnett said. “The slow starts are frustrating but once we start doing the things that we know we can do, we turn into a pretty good team.”
