The Howard Community College Cross Country team competed in the regional championships over the weekend at Westmoreland County College in Pennsylvania. The mens team captured its 12th straight title, while the women went to a tie-breaker for second.
Caroline Haden (Howard High School) continued to lead the women placing second overall with a time of 20:47 for the 5k race. Anna Sandacz was sixth in 21:21, Rachael Lape (Marriotts Ridge) 14th in 23:17, Gabriele Petty 17th in 23:56, Cindy Rockefeller 23rd in 24:21, Kayla Johnson (Atholton) 31st in 25:53 and Shannon Stubs (Chapelgate) 32nd in 26:25.
Gary Smolyak (Atholton) placed second overall running 27:01 on the 8k course. Adam Gartrell (Reservoir) was eighth in 27:57, Brooks Ward placed ninth in 28:08, Edgar Propst 13th in 29:27, Sam Graves 14th in 29:28, John Leierzapf (Long Reach) 17th in 30:41 and Eric Surgrowe (Mt. Hebron) 25th in 36:43
Both the mens and womens programs will travel to Holyoke, Mass. for the NJCAA Division III National Championships on Nov. 7-9.
