Howard Community College cross country posts strong showing at York race

The Howard Community College Dragons traveled to York College of Pennsylvania to compete in the Coach Achtzehn Classic. The men placed fourth out of 11 teams, while the women were 10th.

Adam Gartrell (Reservoir) continues to lead the men after placing third in the race with a time of 27:20. Gary Smolyak (Atholton) came in 15th in 27:41, Sam Graves 32nd in 28:51, Brooks Ward 41st in 29:25, John Leierzapf (Long Reach) 68th in 31:01 and Eric Surgrowe (Mt. Hebron) 101st in 35:30.

Caroline Hade (Howard High School) led the women, finishing 18th with a time of 26:01 for the 6k. Rachael Lape (Marriotts Ridge) placed 78th in 31:15, Cynthia Rockefeller 80th in 31:27, Gabrielle Petty 81st in 31:27, Shelby Holstein 95th in 34:36 and Kayla Johnson (Atholton) 97th in 35:17.

The Dragons are off this week. They will travel to Dickinson College on Sept. 28 for the Red Devil Classic.

For her efforts, Caroline Haden was named NJCAA D-III Runner of the week. The men are currently ranked second in the national polls, while the women are eighth.
