Howard County's 29th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration will be Sunday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Smith Theatre in the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center at Howard Community College, in Columbia.
A reception will begin at 2 p.m. and the program will start at 3 p.m.
The keynote speaker is the Hon. Pamila Brown, Howard County District Court Associate Judge. The event will also include performances from various cultural groups. The winners of the 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Student Essay Contest and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. "Living the Dream" award will be announced.
Howard County residents are also encouraged to sign-up at the event to take part in the Day Of Service Across Howard County, scheduled for Monday, Jan. 20. Volunteer opportunities include learning hands-only CPR, donating food items and assisting Days End Farm Horse Rescue in Woodbine. For additional Day of Service opportunities, go to volunteerhoward.org/hocomlkserve.
The event is free and open to the public, but attendees are asked to be bring a canned food item to support Howard County's Food Bank.

On Monday, Jan. 20, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Ellicott City Colored School Restored is holding its second annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance Day.
The first public school for black children in Howard County, the Ellicott City Colored School Restored is home to exhibits on the history of segregation. Centennial High School's National Honor Society will present a project based on passages from King's speeches, and the Bain Center Gospel Choir will perform. Alumni will also give a presentation on the school's history.
The school is at 8683 Frederick Road in Ellicott City. The event is free and open to the public, but attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for a local food bank.

The following will be closed in Howard County Monday, Jan. 20 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day: government offices; courts; schools/offices; libraries; animal shelters; senior centers; and Robinson Nature Center.
