Columbia dog park opening delayed until spring

The opening of the first dog park in Columbia has been moved back from this fall to spring 2014.

"The hope was that Columbia DogPark would be open, weather permitting, by late November," said Dan D'Amore, director of CA's Open Space Management Division, which will operate the park

"We know the community is as excited about the new dog park as we are. CA wants to give dogs and their people the best possible dog park, and so Columbia DogPark will be opening by spring to give time for the grounds to be in optimal condition. The turf might look nice on the surface, but it needs more time to mature and be firmly established so that it can withstand the four-legged paw traffic.”

The cost of the project is $135,000.

CA is hosting a tour of Columbia DogPark, located in Harper's Choice, on Saturday, Nov. 23, from 10 a.m. to noon.

An opening date has not yet been announced.

Columbia DogPark is located on 2.7 acres off of Rivendell Lane, adjacent to the Columbia SportsPark. The DogPark will be open from sunup to sundown, seven days a week, and will have a nominal registration fee for yearly packages as well as an option for one-day entry.
