Howard County Muslim Council's food drive a success

The Howard County Muslim Council set a new record at its annual food drive/picnic this weekend, donating more than 10,000 pounds of non-perishable food to the Howard County Food Bank.

"This was a record yeard for us," said Shahid Qureshi, a spokesperson for the council. "It was a very successful event."

Since its founding in 2002, the Howard Muslim Council has hosted local food drives, health fairs, candidate forums, blood drives, teacher appreciation dinners and community education events on Islam.

Qureshi said more than 200 people attended the event at West Cedar Lane Park in Columbia on Sunday, Sept. 15, including Howard County Executive Ken Ulman as well as two vying to succeed him in 2014: State Sen. Allan Kittleman and Howard County Council member Courtney Watson.
