The first two villages have submitted candidate filings for the Columbia Association elections on April 26, and at least one familiar name is not in the mix.

Alex Hekimian, a longtime CA board representative from Oakland Mills, will not seek re-election after serving six consecutive one-year terms.

"I need to take a break," Hekimian said about his decision. "I think I've accomplished a lot. It's been a great six years, but it's time to pass the baton."

Hekimian will pass the baton to Reginald Avery, the lone candidate to file in Oakland Mills for the position. Avery, who is elected by default for running unconstested, currently serves as the vice-chair of the Oakland Mills Village Board.

In the Oakland Mills village race, eight candidates have filed for eight seats: Paul Verchinski, Jervis Dorton, Liz Smull, Bill McCormack Jr., Tawania J. Williams, Jonathan L. Edelson, Kathryn D. Wisniewski and Virginia M. Thomas.

Dorton and Smull are the only incumbents in the field.

According to village manager Sandy Cederbaum, the were previously seven seats on the village board, but the current board, after seeing the candidate filings, voted Tuesday to expand the board to eight, resulting in automatic election of all candidates.

Town Center Village also has announced candidate filings. Incumbent Suzanne Waller will face off in a contested election against Jeanne Ketly, president of the Maryland Homeowner's Association, a nonprofit that advocates for homeowner's associations statewide.

The winner will serve a two-year term.

In the Town Center village race, Linda Wengel and Helen Ruther are the only candidates to file for the two open seats. Since they are running uncontested, the election has been canceled and they will be appointed to two-year terms.

The filing deadlines for the other eight Columbia villages haven't passed. They are as follows:
