Columbia man sentenced to 18 years in domestic assaults

A Columbia man and Salvadoran national was sentenced to 18 years in prison this week stemming from two domestic abuse incidents that involved the mother of his 7-year-old son.

Walter Alexis Amaya, 27, of the 10000 block of Daystar Court in Columbia, received the sentence Wednesday morning in Howard County Circuit Court based on two incidents -- one on Oct. 18, 2013, and the other on March 2 of this year.

Amaya is expected to be deported to El Salvador upon completion of his prison sentence, according to State's Attorney spokesman Wayne Kirwan.

In the October incident, Amaya pleaded guilty to second-degree assault on April 3. While awaiting trial in March, Amaya allegedly confronted and kidnapped the woman, using a large knife to assault her, Kirwan said.

Amaya pleaded guilty to kidnapping, witness intimidation and a second-degree assault charge on Wednesday in connection with that incident.
