Hammond girls basketball gets special send-off from singing coach

High school sporting events typically begin with the playing of America's National Anthem, while players, coaches and attending fans turn to the flag, lower their heads and put their hands over their hearts.

Most of the time, the anthem is a brief instrumental, only about a minute long and often pre-recorded. The Star-Spangled Banner becomes a formality — almost procedural.

But before an occasional girls basketball game at Hammond High School, fans who pay the ticket price get a little more for their money.

Hammond varsity head coach Raymona Reid, a health and physical education teacher and aspiring gospel singer, puts her talent to work for her team and the crowd.

On Tuesday, Feb. 18, which was also Senior Night, Reid gave her final performance of the season.
