Man charged with pulling knife on guard at Columbia Giant

A Columbia man was arrested for pulling a knife on a guard at the Giant Food store located in the Owen Brown Village Center last week, according to Howard County Police.

Paul Alan Smith, 49, of the 6500 block of Pressed Gentian, has been charged with first- and second-degree assault, armed robbery, reckless endangerment and theft.

Police said officers responded to the Giant, located in the 7200 block of Cradlerock Way, at approximately 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21, to a robbery in progress after a security guard told police he saw a man placing food items inside his jacket.

When the guard approached the robber, he pulled a kitchen knife out, police said.

The guard followed the man as he walked outside the store. The arriving officers then saw the man and arrested him.

The food items and kitchen knife were recovered by police.
