County police are searching for a man who was caught on video stealing packages that had just been delivered to a Columbia home.

According to a police press release, UPS delivered the packages to a home on the 6200 block of Tamar Drive at approximately 2:40 p.m. Nov. 28. Moments later, home security surveillance video shows a green Subaru station wagon pulling into the driveway.

A white male with short hair in shorts and a hooded sweatshirt exited the vehicle and took the delivered packages from the front door area of the house. He put the packages into the station wagon and drove off.

This is the first such reported theft in the county this holiday season.

Police are asking residents to review any holiday shipments they may be expecting to determine if any of them are missing. Also, if residents have shipped gifts to family members, please check with them to ensure they received them.

If the delivery company reports that the package was delivered, but you believe it may have been stolen, take the following steps:

    •    Check all areas around the residence to see if the delivery was left at another location like a second door or in a hidden spot. Check with neighbors to see if the package was delivered to the wrong address.
    •    Call the delivery company to confirm it was delivered.
    •    Report the incident to police by calling 410-313-2200.

To prevent thefts, police encourage residents to follow these tips:

    •    Track shipments, and try to be home when they are scheduled to arrive.
    •    If you won’t be home, try to have the shipment delivered to your work or ask the delivery company to leave the package in a discreet location.
    •    Ask a neighbor to take the package inside until you get home.
    •    Be aware of suspicious people and vehicles. Delivery drivers are asked to be aware of vehicles following them.
    •    If you notice suspicious behavior, call 911 immediately. Make note of any vehicle’s make, model, tag number and direction of travel.
