Columbia Association endorsements [Letters]

Below, in no particular order, is a collection of letters from our readers endorsing candidates for the upcoming Columbia village center elections.

Swatek has track record of concern for Long Reach community [Letter]

Long Reach residents should make use of the election being extended one week to Saturday, April 27 and vote for Russ Swatek as the CA Council rep. Russ served previously in this position from 2009-2011. He was honest, informative and concerned about how and on what our assessments were spent. He solicited our opinions on project expenditures, concerned about environmental issues with these projects, and the value they would bring or detract from the community.  Read more ...

Hekimian understands the founding vision, future for Columbia [Letter]

Columbia is the wonderful, successful city it is due in large part to the "founding" residents. Many moved here from other areas looking for the promise of what Rouse and company offered, if you wanted to be part of it. We did, and have never regretted that decision.  Read more ...

McCready is supported for being 'honest, upfront, respectful' [Letter]

Voters in this week's election between Julia McCready and Alex Hekimian to represent Oakland Mills on the CA Board need to know a very important fact: a clear majority of the current OM Village Board members support Julia McCready, as do three former Board chairs. The reason is a matter of trust.  Read more ...

Long Reach village residents encouraged to vote in person [Letter]

Absentee ballots must be received at Stonehouse by no later than 4 p.m. on Friday April 19. But here's the problem: I haven't received mine yet (as of Monday April 15), and I've heard that I am not alone. If/when they do arrive, even if we complete them and drop them in outgoing mail immediately, they may miss the deadline.  Read more ...

Cornell's vision aligns with Columbia's original blueprint [Letter]

I am writing in support of Michael Cornell and his next term as a Columbia Council Representative. I have been a neighbor of Mike's for the last 17 years. Mike has been one of the most productive Representatives I have encountered since moving to Columbia in 1986. I especially like his environmental initiatives and his consideration for all economic, racial, and cultural groups. Mike has also brought a measure of collegiality and facilitation to the Council. In short, Mike's vision aligns well with the original blueprint for Columbia — as a community based on social fairness, effective design, and global stewardship.  Read more ...

Julia McCready blends empathy and action. While serving with her on the Oakland Mills Village Board, I saw her thoughtfully consider all sides of issues, and stand up for what is fair and honorable. Hekimian stands for 'openness and transparency' [Letter]

I have lived in Oakland Mills for 35 years. I endorse Alex Hekimian for Columbia Council. Please vote for him on Saturday April 20 at the Other Barn. Alex is the best public servant I know in Columbia. He stands for openness and transparency. Alex worked to ensure that there is a cap on the HOA tax and that the available resources are spent wisely. Last summer the CA stopped mowing certain open spaces. Paths that children use to walk to school were being neglected and the threat of Lyme disease was increased due to high grass. Alex worked to restore the service. The threat of losing this service once again is upon us. Three pools received upgrades due to in part to Alex's advocacy.  Read more ...

Hekimian would work to improve Oakland Mills, and Columbia [Letter]

I have never had a conversation with either of the candidates for the Columbia Council from Oakland Mills Village. As such I'd have to base my choice on their statements published in this paper a week or two ago. Ms. McGready stated she was a supporter of a better Columbia and would work to make Columbia the better choice for families. I can appreciate that as I have seen many changes over the 30 plus years that I have lived here. Some good changes, some not so good. In that statement, she never once mentioned Oakland Mills Village.  Read more ...

Regina Clay has the positive vision that Wilde Lake needs [Letter]

Going into the Wilde Lake Candidates' Forum, I was undecided as to which candidate for Columbia Council would receive my vote: Regina Clay or Nancy McCord.  Read more ...

Regina Clay deserves to be re-elected [Letter]

I have resided in Wilde Lake since 1977. I have attended most all of the candidate's forums since that time. I have stayed current with the operations of the Columbia Association through attendance and the technical media which is available to all of the residents of Columbia. This is part of the communication process that is necessary for a home owners association. The relationship with the village boards of directors and the village representative to the Columbia Board of Directors (CBD) is another part. Although each village sends a representative to the CBD that member must make decisions that are for the benefits for all of Columbia. Each representative must receive consul from their village boards and be able to form decisions by forming alliances with the board members of the other villages. Regina Clay has been very successful at during this during her term as the Wilde Lake Village rep. In the process she has not forgotten that the needs and desire of Wilde Lake must be articulated.  Read more ...

Julia McCready is bringing youth back to Oakland Mills [Letter]

Julia McCready is currently running for the CA Board of Directors, representing Oakland Mills. Supporting her is important to me because Oakland Mills has been my home for most of my life and I care what happens to it. When I was younger my family was very involved in community events so I have been around Julia a lot growing up. Despite my young age Julia always made me feel included and took my input seriously.  Read more ...

There will be a contested election for CA Board of Directors in Oakland Mills this year, but there is only one candidate that fully understands the concerns of Oakland Mills residents and stands by them. Oakland Mills candidate Julia McCready is 'positive, forward thinker' [Letter]

As the former chair of the Oakland Mills Village Board, I have had the pleasure of working with both candidates for Columbia Council. I am supporting Julia McCready. When Julia served on the board, she listened to all voices regarding items before the board, and with her great grasp of the issues, asked the tough questions to determine what is best for Oakland Mills and Columbia.  Read more ...
