Columbia Association to host Hispanic culture celebration

The Columbia Association is inviting community members to the Columbia SportsPark on Saturday, Sept. 29 to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month at its Dia de la Familia celebration.

The three-hour event starts at 3 p.m., and will include a DJ playing Latin music, a salsa dance competition, a moon bounce, children's entertainers, arts and crafts, a Zumba demonstration and food.

The best part: It's all free.

“This is a very popular event with the Hispanic community,” said Laura Smit, CA’s program manager for International Exchange and Multicultural Programs. “It’s not just for Hispanic people, though. It’s for anybody who loves Latin music and culture.”

This year will mark the 10th year CA has sponsored Día de la Familia, initially called Día De La Familia Hispana, which began in 2003.

According to a news release, the event "grew out of gatherings of local Hispanic residents and began as part of an effort with community groups such as Conexiones to increase foreign-born residents' awareness of CA and help ease their transition into the area all while coinciding with National Hispanic Heritage Month."
