Council approves affordable housing group for downtown Columbia

The County Council Monday unanimously approved the Downtown Columbia Housing Foundation, which will be tasked with providing affordable housing in downtown Columbia.

The foundation will be run by 14 directors, including attorneys, nonprofit directors and real estate developers. Working with the county, they will be responsible for administering affordable housing funds for downtown Columbia, mostly through required developer contributions.

Also on Monday, the council unanimously approved a $107 million capital budget request from the Howard County Board of Education.T

he fiscal year 2014 capital budget includes renovations to Longfellow Elementary School and Atholton High School, a new elementary school in Elkridge and a new middle school in the Oxford Square development.
