North Carolina man arrested in Columbia woman's murder

A 43-year-old North Carolina man has been arrested and accused of the May 4 murder of Deborah Castellano, of Columbia, Howard County police said.

Ryan Patrick Matthias, of Charlotte, N.C., was taken into custody by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police May 11 and is being held on a detainer until he is extradited to Maryland to face charges, police said.

Castellano, 47, was found Saturday, May 4, dead in her car outside her home in the 9600 block of Basket Ring Road in Columbia. She had been shot multiple times.

Police said Castellano had been harassed recently by Matthias, her ex-boyfriend, and after her death family members told police they had been concerned for her safety. Both Castellano and Matthias had been arrested in New York for a domestic violence incident in March, police said.

Castellano had ended the relationship, moved to Columbia and was working at Maryland Live. But police said Matthias had continued to stalk and harass her. Castellano had not reported the harassment to Howard County police.

Police said Matthias had rented a car in North Carolina Friday, May 3, the day before the murder, and returned it Sunday, May 5 with more than 1,000 miles logged.
