A plea hearing was scheduled for Monday afternoon for Xavier Trevon Bates, the Columbia teenager charged with killing another teen at a Columbia apartment complex last July.
Howard County Circuit Court Judge Richard S. Bernhardt, who last month ruled that Bates, 19, was competent to stand trial, was set to preside over the plea hearing at the county courthouse in Ellicott City.
On July 27, 2011 at about 10 p.m., police responding to a reported stabbing arrived at the Sierra Woods apartment complex, located in the 8700 block of Airybrink Lane, found Christian Lendal Hall, 17, of Columbia, covered in blood on the third floor of an apartment building.
Hall had suffered multiple stab wounds, police later said. He was taken to Howard County General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Officers found Bates at the hospital, being treated for a stab wound in his hand, and arrested him.
The two teenagers had been in an argument earlier that day, a police investigation determined, and Bates went to Hall's residence to continue the fight that night.
On Aug. 17, Judge Bernhardt rejected Bates' attorney's arguments that Bates had a severe mental disorder and ruled he was competent to stand trial in the slaying. Bates's trial is scheduled for Oct. 3.
