The teen, whom police did not identify at the request of his family, was one of 20 hospitalized after the "Mad Decent Block Party" music festival at the Columbia venue. Authorities identified the man who died Saturday as Tyler Fox Viscardi, 20, of Raleigh, N.C. Police do not believe the two knew each other. The others were treated and released from Howard County General Hospital.
Investigators said MDMA, also known as Ecstasy or Molly, was the most commonly used drug among the crowd at the event. The drug is a psychoactive synthetic similar to stimulants and hallucinogens, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. It increases heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature.
The exact cause of death is pending an autopsy and toxicology report from the Office of the State Medical Examiner, police said.
The music festival travels to venues across the country, featuring mostly electronic dance music acts like Diplo and Sleigh Bells. Police said similar drug overdoses have been seen at other such festivals.
Diplo, a DJ who helped found Mad Decent Block Party, wrote on his Twitter account Saturday: "Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by yesterday's event. we are truly devastated."
Police at the concert also issued 50 underage drinking citations and arrested three people: one for an assault on an officer, one for domestic assault, and one for marijuana possession with intent to distribute.
In a statement released Saturday, Seth Hurwitz, chairman of I.M.P. and operator of Merriweather Post Pavilion, said, "Our hearts go out to the family as they face the unimaginable."
