River Hill leads 3A/4A East regional wrestling tournament after quarterfinals

Defending 3A/4A state tournament champion River Hill leads the 3A/4A East regional tournament at Wilde Lake after the conclusion of Friday evening's quarterfinal round.

The Hawks held a 3.5 point lead, 40-36.5, over Howard County rival Reservoir.

South River (29.5), which knocked River Hill out of the regional dual tournament earlier this month, rounded out the top three teams.

River Hill's Michael Beck (106), Taariq Mohammed (113), Brian Kirby (182), Cory Daniel (195), Logan Kirby (220) and Justin Nestor (285) all advanced to Saturday morning's semifinal round.

Beck, Daniel and Logan Kirby are a combined 98-0 this season.

Reservoir, the 2010 state tournament champion, also sent six wrestlers in the semifinals: Troy Kilcarr (106), Trent Kilcarr (113), Mason Kilcarr (132), Sam Rowell (152), Wes Beattie (170) and Michael Sullivan (220).

South River had 11 wrestlers competing in the quarterfinal round, but only five — Austin Alley (126), Jordan Orme (132), Tre Puccinelli (138), Collin Alley (145) and Anthony Rossi (195) — survived into the semis.

Bel Air's William Holder-Moore (41-0) and Wilde Lake's Tola Morakinyo (34-0) are also still undefeated, and could meet up in the 170-pound championship Saturday evening.

The regional finals are scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m. at Wilde Lake.
