Glenelg gets first win of New Year; downs Hammond, 59-37

Riding a losing streak in county play that spanned back to 2013, visiting Glenelg finally broke through against Hammond on Friday, 59-37.

“I’m relieved,” said Gladiators coach Chris Beil. “We needed this win more than anything.”

Ally Forejt had12 points for Glenelg, while Lauren Wright registered 10 points and six rebounds.

Though the Gladiators (5-7, 6-8) were in control for most of the game, Hammond stayed in contention, and even held a 7-6 lead after the first quarter. Beil touted the Golden Bears (1-12, 2-14) as an improved squad, but said missed shots plagued his team in the game’s early stages.

“The defense picked us up a bit,” he said.

Bright spots for Hammond included Jameelah Wallace’s 11 points and Lauren Terry’s 10 boards. Coach Raymona Reid said she’s seen big changes since her team first took the floor this winter.

“When they see that they’re in the game, they start to get convinced that they can play with other varsity teams, and that’s good to see,” she said. “The big deal is them really understanding that they have to believe in each other.”

Glenelg’s last county win came over Wilde Lake on Dec. 19. The Gladiators will take on the Wildecats again on Monday, Jan. 27.
