On the heels of its thrilling overtime victory over Marriotts Ridge earlier this week, River Hill came out Thursday against Centennial and maintained its momentum.
Kick-started by a goal from Jake Turney just 18 seconds after the opening kickoff, River Hill went on to score a total of three times in the first 10 minutes en route to a 3-1 victory over the Eagles on the road.
“I was pleased with the way we came out and, you know, that was the big question, ‘What’s the next step going to be for us after that big emotional high of Tuesday? I think the guys answered that right away,” River Hill coach Matt Shagogue said. “That was a fantastic opening 10 minutes.”
Turney got his goal after taking a feed from teammate Alec Smith and making a run right down the middle of the defense. Shortly after that, it was Turney doing the setting up to make it 2-0.
Turney played a ball to Zach Riso, who finished past Centennial goalie Kevin Wilson (3 saves). Then Riso completed the early run by converting a penalty kick for a 3-0 River Hill (6-1, 9-1) lead.
“It was a horrible lapse on that first goal and then, as everyone is trying to get their wind back, they put in the second and then third goals,” Centennial coach Jim Zehe said. “It’s unfortunately a familiar story for us, as I’ve talked to them before about having a better response to adversity and a better response to goals … but we continue to struggle with that at the moment.”
Trailing by three, Centennial (4-2, 6-3) did pick things up. The Eagles controlled the run of play for the final 25 minutes of the first half and the early stages of the second. The offensive pressure was rewarded, as Max Dwyer found the net on a free kick just less than five minutes after halftime.
But that turned out to be the only time Centennial found then net, as River Hill secured the two-goal victory.
“We did do some good things, just not enough to come back from that kind of hole,” Zehe said.
