A 50-year-old Silver Spring woman was in serious but stable condition Sunday after being struck by a car on the shoulder of a road in Laurel Saturday night, Howard County police said.
At about 9:48 p.m. Saturday, a 2007 Volvo XC90 driven by a 58-year-old Silver Spring man struck the woman's vehicle, a disabled 2001 Pontiac Montana van, which pushed the woman into a guardrail, police said in a release. The crash closed two southbound lanes of Rt. 29 near Md. Route 216 for nearly three hours.
Howard County police said the driver of the Volvo failed to stay within his lane and may have been impaired by alcohol based upon preliminary investigation.
The woman was transported to Maryland shock trauma, and the incident remains under investigation.
