Healthy kids clinic
Howard County General Hospital in partnership with The Mall in Columbia will host a healthy kids clinic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 8 in the Center Court. The event will feature bone density, blood pressure, height/weight, growth and development screenings. Look Good, Feel Better
The free program teaches beauty techniques to women with cancer to help them combat the appearance-related side effects of treatment. Each participate receives a bag of cosmetics donated from major manufacturers as well as instruction and suggestions for wig care and head coverings. The class is taught by a licensed cosmetologist. Classes are held the third Monday of every month at the Howard County Hospital Wellness Center in the Medical Pavilion, 10710 Charter Drive in Columbia. •Essentials in baby-sitting. Learn to manage children, create a safe environment and apply basic emergency techniques from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25. Cost: $50 includes lunch.
•Yoga and nutrition for arthritis. Use yoga movements to alleviate joint discomfort and discover how nutrition can support a healthy immune system and reduce inflammation, noon to 1 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 9 to Oct. 13. Cost $66.
•Prenatal exercise. Low-impact exercise to help women prepare for giving birth, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13 to Nov. 1. $88/eight sessions.
•Healthy weight, healthy you and kitchen wisdom. Part 1 will discuss planning meals that provide balance in your diet and promote well-being from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 17. In Part 2, participants will join in cooking demonstrations from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 24.
•Seasonal checkups for men and women. The checkup will measure cholesterol including HDL, LDL and triglyceride levels; blood cell counts; and thyroid-stimulating hormone. Cost is $50. A checkup with vitamin D test, blood pressure screening, height/weight, body mass index measurement and breast health information costs $80. Both tests will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 18.
