'The Sound of Music'

The Howard County Arts Council presents two exhibits through Friday, Dec. 13, in the galleries at the Howard County Center for the Arts, 8510 High Ridge Road. In Gallery I is the biennial multimedia juried exhibit "Art HoCo 2013," featuring more than 50 works by 39 Howard County artists. Genealogical help desk
The Howard County Genealogical Society offers a free help desk at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Howard County Library's Miller branch, 9421 Frederick Road. Help is available for researching all areas of the U.S., Europe and other countries. Information: 410-480-3250.
English conversation The Miller branch of the Howard County Public Library, 9421 Frederick Road, offers "Let's Get Together: English Conversation Club," a chance for those for whom English is a second language to practice speaking and understanding English in a group setting. Holiday event The center's first Holiday Craft Boutique will be held from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, with more than 20 vendors offering jewelry, pottery, quilted items, knitted items, wood works, greeting cards, jams and jellies, wreaths, ornaments and more. There will also be door prizes and giveaways at the event sponsored by Encore of Turf Valley. Proceeds benefit Grassroots of Howard County and the center. Admission is $1.
Blood pressure screenings Stop in from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays for free blood pressure readings by a registered nurse. Information: 410-313-1425.
Qi Gong Jessica Koch leads students in a class that consists of a series of gentle movements synchronized with breathing that promotes energy movement through the body. Classes will be held Jan. 10-March 14. Cost is $58.
