Food and wine tasting

The Y of Central Maryland's annual "Food & Wine Tasting" takes place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Dancel Family Center Y, 4331 Montgomery Road. Event feature samplings of wine, beer and food from local restaurants as well as live music and raffles. History presentation

The Howard County Historical Society presents "A History of the Covered Bridges of Howard County and Central Maryland" at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at 8328 Court Ave. Jim Smedley will describe the construction and design of the covered bridges that once stood across Maryland. Literary event and meeting

The American Association of University Women presents author Debbi Mack in a program "How I Self-Published My Way onto the New York Times Fiction Bestseller List" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, at the Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road. Post office renovation

A construction project to renovate and restore the historic Ellicott City Post Office at 8267 Main St. is under way and will include new office space and a visitors' center. The project is expected to be completed by late October. Traffic will not be affected. Information: 410-313-3440.
