Genealogy society meeting

The Howard County Genealogical Society meets at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, at the Ellicott City Senior Center, located behind the Miller branch of Howard County Public Library, 9401 Frederick Road. Meeting presents an opportunity for those attending to share humorous stories about their genealogy research or breakthroughs in tracing their family tree. A small prize will be awarded to the best in each category. There will also be a book fair, and members are encouraged to bring genealogy books to swap or sell through a silent auction that will also include a number of donated books. Free. Luncheon

The League of Women Voters will host its annual luncheon with the County Delegation to the Maryland General Assembly beginning at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at Bethany United Methodist Church, 2875 Bethany Lane in Ellicott City. 'Miracle on 34th Street'

Student exchange program

The Columbia Association will offer information sessions for parents and teens about the 2012 Sister Cities High School Student International Exchange Program from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at 10221 Wincopin Circle in Columbia.

Laura Smit, program manager for the association's exchange programs, will speak and answer questions about the monthlong July program, which consists of two weeks of cultural and linguistic immersion in one of Columbia's sister cities, Cergy-Pontoise, France, or Tres Cantos, Spain, where students will be hosted by the family of a French or Spanish student. After returning to the U.S., students and their parents will host their French or Spanish counterpart for two weeks.

Registration fee is $650 for Columbia residents and $790 for others. Airline tickets may range from $1,100 to $1,500 per person. Applicants must be high school students living in Howard County and have completed high school level two of French or Spanish by the end of the academic year or have the equivalent language fluency. Deadline for applications is Feb. 17.

Art exhibits

The Howard County Arts Council presents two new exhibits in the galleries at the Howard County Center for the Arts, 8510 High Ridge Road in Ellicott City.

Gallery I features the multimedia exhibit "Art HoCo 2011," with more than 40 works by 18 Howard County artists. Gallery II features works by Tracey Clarke and Sarah Wegner titled "Modern Mythologies." Exhibits runs through Friday, Dec. 16. Scholarships available

The Howard County Arts Council's 2012 arts scholarship application is available to high school seniors planning to pursue an arts degree. This year, the arts council will award a minimum of $10,000 to students entering college in the 2012-2013 academic year.

Scholarships must be used for enrollment in an accredited college program for a degree in the arts. Awards will be made in the minimum amount of $1,000 and may be used only for tuition and fees.
