Wine fest volunteers
The Department of Recreation and Parks is accepting applications from individuals 21 and older who are interested in volunteering at the annual "Wine in the Woods Festival" being held Saturday-Sunday, May 19-20, at Symphony Woods in Columbia. In exchange for a four-hour shift, volunteers will receive an admission ticket redeemable for either day of the festival. There are two shifts each day. Local and regional farmers will provide fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy, eggs and baked goods at farmers' markets in the area.

Teen self-esteem program
The Empowerment Movement sponsors "I AM! an Exhibit of Self-esteem" performance and reception from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 20 at the Columbia Association Art Center, 6100 Foreland Garth. Reception features poetry, visual arts, prose, music, and dance created by teens. Information: 410-997-0304.
'Wine in the Garden'
The Howard County Conservancy holds its annual "Wine in the Garden" party from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. May 24 at 10520 Old Frederick Road. Guests can enjoy wine and foods from local restaurants and caterers while listening to bluegrass music in the conservancy's native plant garden. They will also be able to browse a large silent auction filled with artwork, getaways and other items. Tickets are $40 in advance, $50 after May 20. Information: 410-465-8877 or hcconservancy.org.
Hope Gala is June 2
Tickets are on sale for the Domestic Violence Center's fundraising event, the Hope Gala, being held from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. June 2 at the Robinson Nature Center, 6692 Cedar Lane in Columbia. This year's gala honors County Executive Ken Ulman for his leadership on addressing intimate partner violence and sexual assault and his commitment to family and victim services. In addition to dinner, the event features a live jazz band, silent auction and "Spirits to Sparkle" raffle. Tickets are $125 per person and may be purchased at dvcenter.org. The Columbia Association presents its Lakefront Wednesdays Lunchtime Concert Series featuring local musicians performing rock, folk, jazz, flamenco and reggae.
