Two men were shot -- one fatally -- at a Halloween party in an upscale Columbia neighborhood early this morning, Howard County police said. Silver Spring resident Aaron Thomas Brice, 19, was declared dead at the scene. Columbia resident Nathaniel Quick, 22, was sent to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in critical condition. Two more partygoers with injuries that authorities said did not appear to be related to the shooting were sent to Howard County General Hospital.

Police fielded multiple calls around 1:15 a.m. about shots fired inside a residence on Manorstone Lane. They found more than 100 people there when they arrived. Neighbors said some partygoers had already scattered.

"I assumed it was fireworks," said Fadeke Iluyomade, 51, a neighbor who had been up late working in her study. "Then suddenly there were a lot of people running, running away from the house. Some were running on my lawn. That was when I called the police because I didn't know what was going on."

The neighborhood is tucked between a golf course and the 1,000-acre Middle Patuxent Environmental Area. Some of the large homes there are valued at more than $2 million, and residents said it's usually a quiet place.

But Rob Weiss, who has lived in the neighborhood for a year and a half, said it was the second large party thrown there in recent months.

"This summer, there was a similar cadre of cars up and down the street," he said. "And there were a lot of kids running around, screaming and yelling." Police shut down Route 108 near the intersection with Manorstone Lane for most of the morning as they sorted through the crime scene, reopening the artery around 11 a.m.

They said they are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information and asked residents to call 410-313-3200.
