In search of an engagement gift for a friend, Jessica Rinehart arrived at The Nest On Main for the first time just 10 minutes before the store closed. She took a chance and went into the boutique, which had recently opened in Bel Air.
“The shop just caught my eye — her windows were great,” the Forest Hill resident recalled.
Upon entering the home goods boutique, Rhinehart realized that she knew the owner, Kathi Gromacki, who used to work at the Harford County gift shop Mayfields.
“I saw Kathi and I knew I could find something there,” said Rhinehart, who bought a living heart-shaped wreath and a towel. “Within 10 minutes I had it. I was so excited about my gift. … It was perfect.”
With an array of items — from furniture to kitchenware, pancake mixes to nut butters — Bel Air’s new store lives up to its tagline: the simple comforts of home.
Gromacki opened up the 2,000-square-foot store in October, shortly after returning to the retail world after 21 years as a stay-at-home mother to her four children — ages 16 to 21.
Gromacki worked at Mayfields for three years before it closed its Forrest Hill location (it later consolidated into its current Bel Air location).
“When I started working again in retail it rekindled my love for retail. I wanted to bring this love to Main Street,” she said.
Gromacki, a Forest Hill resident, thinks that Rhinehart’s experience is a typical one.
“The Nest on Main has been described by customers as ‘a good place to find a gift for somebody,’ ” Gromacki said.
The store, which has an eye-catching robin’s-egg-blue front door, is stocked with plenty of reclaimed and refinished furniture and a good dose of local flair — featuring goods from 20 local artisans.
Rhinehart has been back two more times since her initial visit — all have been successful gift-finding excursions.
“Whenever I go in there … I don’t have a gift in mind,” she said. “But I never have any problem finding it. She has a great variety.
Fittingly, the store makes you feel at home, she says.
“I’m happy for her. And I’m happy for us that we have it.”
