Harford Sheriff's Office buying helicopter, creating aviation unit

The Harford County Sheriff's Office is creating its own aviation unit and getting its own helicopter.

The Sheriff's Office has scheduled a press conference for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3 at the Forest Hill Business Airpark, 109 E. Jarrettsville Road in Forest Hill, to make the announcement and debut the new helicopter.

"The sheriff is excited to announce a new law enforcement capability that will allow the sheriff's office to better serve the citizens of Harford County," Sheriff's Office spokesman Edward Hopkins said Wednesday.

Hopkins said the agency would not have any further comments about the acquisition of the helicopter nor the creation of the aviation unit until Tuesday's press conference, when all media outlets are together.

Hopkins would not say how much the helicopter, a Bell OH 58, cost or what it will cost to create and operate the aviation unit.

Baltimore County and Baltimore City police departments both have aviation units.
