Ladew Gardens in Monkton will celebrate Christmas in seasonal resplendence with its annual open house Dec. 13-15, as local floral designers and local garden clubs are invited to decorate the rooms of the circa 1747 Manor House, adorning the walls, tabletops and fireplace mantels in festive holiday splendor.
In its 33rd year, Ladew's Christmas Open House, according to the event's organizers, has been called "one of Maryland's most memorable and decorative holiday events."
The Christmas Open House is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This year's theme is "Christmas Through the Ages."
Admission to the Christmas Open House is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students and $2 for children 12 and under. There is no charge for members. For ticket information, call 410-557-9570.
New this year, extra special floral displays will adorn the newly renovated drawing room, which has recently undergone extensive renovations to more accurately portray the original character of the room during the period from 1935 to 1960, when the manor house was the beloved home of Harvey S. Ladew.
The manor house, filled with equestrian and fox hunting memorabilia, fine art and English antiques, is a living legacy to the style, elegance and wit of Mr. Ladew, the man who created it.
The weekend festivities will feature live seasonal music performed by Maryland school children and other accomplished instrumentalists.
Visitors to the Christmas Open House are also invited to enjoy complimentary hot cider and cookies, as well as an exceptional Greens Sale featuring hand-crafted fresh holiday decorations — wreaths, table arrangements and decorations — lovingly created through the generosity of volunteers and design professionals.
Proceeds from the Open House and Greens Sale benefit Ladew's Manor House, 22-acre gardens, and 60-acre Nature Walk.
The Ladew Gift Shop will be open during the Christmas Open House, offering seasonal gifts and decorative items for home and garden, and unique selections for holiday giving. The Ladew Café will be open for lunch, snacks and hot cocoa.
Weather-permitting, the 22-acre gardens will also be open for self-guided tours during the Christmas Open House.
Ladew is located at 3535 Jarrettsville Pike. For more information, call 410-557-9570 or visit http://www.ladewgardens.com.
