The Klein's ShopRite of Maryland Charitable Foundation has made a $10,000 donation to the Harford County Sheriff's Foundation, earmarked for funding the Sheriff's Office's Youth Services Division.

The donation was commemorated by the presentation at Klein's ShopRite in Forest Hill of a "big check" to Sheriff L. Jesse Bane and Capt. Steve Thomas of the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

"The Youth Services Division was founded in 2007 by Sheriff Bane, soon after he took office," Thomas, Commander of Youth Services for Harford County, said. "It is dedicated to establishing creative ways to reach out to our county's at-risk youth and create positive role models for them."

Asked why the Klein Foundation made this specific donation, Andrew P. Klein, president of the Klein's ShopRite of Maryland Charitable Foundation, said "the Harford County Sheriff's Office is working hard to create a link with 'youth at risk' and to humanize the police force, so that our sheriff's deputies are perceived as helping the community and providing positive role models and opportunities. They need funding to help them get the message out that the police are there to help them, and we want to help make that happen."

"This contribution turns words into actions," Howard S. Klein, vice president and general counsel of Klein's ShopRite. "One hundred percent of the grant will be used to help youths identified as being at risk. This is an extremely important and rewarding thing to do, and it benefits our entire community."

According to Harford County Sheriff L. Jesse Bane, "This wonderful donation to our foundation continues to demonstrate the commitment of the Klein family to our community, and especially to the youth of Harford County, both now and in the future."

Agreeing with Bane, Thomas stated that "this generous donation will fund at-risk youth programs such as our Teen Court, Badges for Baseball, the Harford County Sheriff's Office Explorer Post 6600 and our work with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Harford County."

Klein's ShopRite of Maryland is a family-owned business, originally founded in 1925, that operates ShopRite grocery stores in Harford County and in Baltimore County. Klein's ShopRite recently was the title sponsor of the 2013 March of Dimes Harford County March for Babies and has previously made significant donations to the Maryland Food Bank and Harford County Community Action Agency Food Banks, as well as to faith-based charities, community charities and other causes. Klein's ShopRite recently broke ground on its ninth store, its first in Baltimore City, at a location in Howard Park identified as a "food desert," to address community needs for access to healthy food within a neighborhood.
